Entering the dimly lit tavern and peering around, his eyes glinting slightly behind hollow sockets, the pale-faced man looked both weary and somewhat frustrated. He strode over to the far left of the bar and occupied a seat, his black coat swishing behind him and paying no heed to the curious stares from some of the more regular customers; his pallid complexion and dark features standing out a mile next to their rosey cheeks and golden curls. He murmered his order quietly to the man serving, then proceeded to wait as he began to mix the brew, contemplating everything which had transpired this past month.
He had been working as Dr. Finkelstein's lab assistant - a friend helping out a friend. Jack had always been deeply interested in science, for as long as his memory went back, and would often tinker around at home, carrying out experiments and testing his own theories. What he'd become involved in recently with Finkelstein however, was far more than just another experiment. It was much darker; his tasks had become very grim - even for someone like Skellington who was the King of Fright around Halloween Town.
He hadn't anticipated just how wrong it would feel, at first agreeing because he wanted to be helpful to the mad scientist; after all, he'd taken Jack under his wing when he first came to Halloween Town, so it felt like some sort of payment. Now, he couldn't help but wonder if he had just been a ploy in Finkelstein's most insane experiment. And yet, he did it. He provided the man with the things he needed; because he was the gravekeeper, and as as guilty as he felt to admit to it, he wanted to witness it firsthand.
Peering up as the bar-keeper slid the beverage towards him, Jack lifted the glass to his lips and sipped from it, the peppery liquid going down a treat when it would've probably burnt a hole in the throat of anyone else sitting there. He glanced at his fingers, to the dirt behind his nails that he just couldn't seem to get rid of. Still, he reminded himself, once the creation was brought to life, perhaps he would feel less ashamed of his part in it. After all, they were creating new life from something that had barely lived at all. A bit like what he himself had become, it seemed. The girl would thank them in the end, surely.
